Basics

Baking doesn’t need to be expensive.  You can get many of your starter items at the dollar store, thrift stores, or Wal-Mart.  Here’s a list of the basic equipment and ingredients to always have on hand.  You never know when you’ll need to whip up a quick dessert!

Basic equipment

  • a glass or ceramic pie plate
  • cake pans in various sizes
  • a cupcake pan
  • a loaf pan
  • a cookie sheet
  • measuring cups and spoons
  • a multi-sided grater
  • a hand mixer

Staple ingredients:

  • all-purpose flour
  • white, light brown, and powdered sugar
  • cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda, and salt
  • butter (keep it in the freezer)
  • vegetable oil
  • cocoa

  1. Great getting started equipment list. I’ve had great luck getting cooking/baking equipment at garage and estate sales. Sometimes I find things that look like they’ve never been used. I think people buy things with good intentions or receive them as gifts and then never make that tart or bundt cake that looked so great in the cookbook that they ran out and bought just the right pan.
